Americans in Canada – What You Should Know

Often touted as the 51st state Canada has always been the friendly northern neighbour to those in the USA. Canada is not part of the US and has its own rules, customs and cultures. In the following article, we will be going over a list of important things Americans in Canada should while they are visiting the great white north.  Tripsavvy is the original author of this list.

1) You must have a passport. Like mentioned before, Canada is NOT part of the USA so you will need your American Passport to get through customs and over the border. This includes driving through the border.

2) You can bring your dog, but not produce. It is important for any country to check what you can and cannot bring past the border. Americans often make the mistakes of bringing their firearms which are restricted in Canada. Americans in Canada can be assured that their dogs are safe to enter, but their apples and guns, are not.

3) Your US drivers license is valid. Driving in Canada is very similar to driving in the US. There are, however, a few key restrictions you should know about. You cannot smoke in Cars if there are minors accompanying you. There are also many distracted driving laws in effect in every province. So if you’re driving, keep your eyes on the road at all times.

4) You cannot use US Currency everywhere. For a little while Canadian currency was worth more than its US counterparts, but lately, the value has plummeted. So the likely hood of you using your US currency at its proper inflated value is unlikely. Stores will not take it, or they will take it as a 1:1 value with the Canadian dollar.
